Change of sex designation
You can change the sex designation on your Saskatchewan birth certificate, health card or both.
Sex designation options include:
- M – male
- F – female
- X – non-binary
You can also choose non-display, so your sex designation doesn't appear on your health card.
Once your Saskatchewan birth registration is updated, the X marker can also appear on future vital event registrations or certificates, such as a marriage certificate.

Additional information
Since July 2020, a non-binary gender marker of "X" is available on vital event registrations and applicable certificates as part of the change of sex designation process to individuals who do not identify as male or female.
Since March 2021, Saskatchewan residents were able to remove sex designation from their health card.
Since August 2021, a further change was made to recognize that the original binary choices on health cards were not inclusive of all Saskatchewan residents. The display options are M, F, X, or non display.
