Death certificates

Who can apply

You can apply for a death certificate or a copy of death registration if you are:  

  • the spouse of the person who died, if you were legally married or common-law at the time of death 
  • a parent listed on the original registration of birth 
  • an adult child, 18 or older, of the person who died  

  • a legal custodian, personal guardian, or property guardian of an eligible person’s estate  
  • applying to prove Métis or Treaty Status 
  • named in a Saskatchewan court order or subpoena 
  • a joint tenant 
  • the Public Guardian and Trustee 
  • responsible for transporting the body 
  • authorized in writing by an eligible person

Types of certificates

Standard size certificate

Certificate size: 7" x 8.5"

A standard death certificate includes:

  • full name
  • date of death
  • place of death
  • sex
  • marital status
  • registration number and registration date

This is the best choice for land title, pension and banking purposes. 


Copy of registration of death

Certificate size: 8.5" x 14"

A copy of registration of death includes the information from the original legal death registration.


Genealogical copy

A genealogical copy is a copy of the original registration of death used for family history research.

It’s available for deaths registered in Saskatchewan more than 70 years ago.

What you need to apply

To apply, you'll need:

  • the last name and given name(s) of the person who died

  • the date and place of death

  • the marital status of the person who died

  • the names of the person's mother and father

  • one piece of government-issued ID or two other pieces of ID with your signature 

You may need to provide more documents, depending on who is ordering the death certificate.
