Referral Management Service

Connecting patients to the right specialist sooner is an important part of improving health care – and putting patients first – in Saskatchewan.

The Referral Management Service (RMS) supports more efficient referral and consultation processes by improving communication and co-ordination between care providers. It is one of several tools health care providers can use to connect patients to specialists.

With pooled referrals, your patients can be directed to the next available qualified specialist instead of waiting for one specific provider.

Pooled referrals support access to timely care by:

  • allowing referrals to be considered based on your patient’s care needs
  • considering available specialists’ workloads and patient lists

RMS helps participating specialties receive, review and manage referrals more consistently and efficiently.

About pooling referrals and RMS

In traditional referral processes, patients are often referred directly to a specific specialist. Because wait lists vary by specialist, patients with similar health concerns may wait different amounts of time before receiving care.

RMS helps participating specialties manage referrals more efficiently. Together, RMS and pooled referrals help reduce wait times and help your patients see a specialist sooner.

Pooled referrals help patients, providers and specialists access the information they need to support timely quality care. If another specialist is better suited to see a patient, referrals can be reassigned within the participating specialty group. The referring provider is notified when this happens.

Pooled referrals and referral tracking can help improve services, support system planning, and inform recruitment and retention across Saskatchewan.
